Quick presentation

You will enjoy Operational Research if you like solving practical quantitative problems and seeing the solutions implemented. Graduates immediately can play an effective role in providing model-based support to managers to help them make better decisions at an operational/technical level.

By studying Operational Research you will develop a valuable combination of modelling, computing, analytical, mathematical, interpersonal and communication skills. You will be able to design and implement management interventions, employ a range of OR and systems methods and techniques, to design and implement algorithm as well their integration in decision support software, use a range of relevant software, and demonstrate your awareness of specific managerial issues.

An Operational Research MSc provides

  • an ideal background for a career in industry (e.g., software, consulting, production, transport, finance, telecom) and

  • strong foundations for an academic research.

International MSc ORO

The International MSc in Computer Science on Optimization in Operations Research (ORO) provides an opportunity for advanced study in Operations Research. The programme offers the possibility of exciting and rewarding career opportunities and progression in areas such as in decision support software, logistics, industrial engineering, and operational research/management science. The programme proposes the access for further study for a PhD. The employment record of the programme is excellent. There is an active alumni network.

The programme offers

  • a well balanced curriculum from theory and algorithms of OR (discrete, numerical, multi objective optimization) to  application domains of OR (transport, logistics, planning, scheduling, bioinformatics);
  • a strong education in computer science (modeling languages, solvers, decision software) including advanced aspects of decision software technologies (human-computer interface, high performance computing);
  • opportunities for a practical internship or a research internship with possibilities for thesis topics prepared in a recognized research laboratories affiliated to the CNRS (National French Center for Research);
  • teaching staff with established scientific records and reputations in OR, algorithms and software;
  • After completing all the courses, the possibility for students who have spent a semester at Brussels in the framework of our programme exchange, to have two master degrees:
    • MSc in Computer Science "Optimization in Operational Research" (Nantes Université, France) and
    • MSc in Computer Science "Algorithms and Optimization" (Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium).

Entry requirements

Our students come from diverse backgrounds such as computer science, engineering, mathematics and other quantitative disciplines.

For an admission in year 1 of this programme, you should have, or be expecting, a first degree that includes some computer science and mathematics; for example, science, engineering, statistics or economics.

A direct admission in year 2 of this programme is possible if you have validated the corresponding courses (or their equivalent) of the year 1.

For international students

Check our specific requirements and the documentation you will need to submit as part of your application.

Programme Fee

The tuition fee per year of the programme is around 450 euros.

Who should apply?

Students who are motivated by Operations Research, and have completed the entry requirements.

Our facilities

Within our Department of Computer Sciences, the MSc ORO has its own computing room, a library with lecture books, a conviviality space and a meeting room which can be pre-booked for study sessions or used by our students at short notice (if available) for quiet study.

Programme outline

120 credits ECTS.

The Master ORO offers two options: a research master degree or an applied master degree.

An internship of minimum 5 months (into a research center or a business department of a company) has to be fulfilled during the spring semester of the year 2.
